Syllabus Description (from Canvas):

This course is designed for students with no prior experience of learning Japanese.  If you have taken at least one year of Japanese classes at high school, courses at other colleges or speak Japanese at home, you may not belong to Japan 134.  Please refer to our department website for placement test.  

The first year Japanese students will participate in class in Japanese from the very beginning and do many pair and group activities to enhance their understanding of the Japanese language. You will learn Japanese characters and about 139 Chinese characters or kanji. You will learn to introduce yourself in Japanese, to talk about your daily life, to ask/answer simple questions, and to shop and place an order. Tobira I Beginning Japanese is used to develop core skills in speaking, listening, writing and reading.

Catalog Description:
Fundamentals of the modern Japanese language. Oral communication skills, basic grammar, and reading/writing of hiragana, katakana, and basic kanji. No initial knowledge of Japanese is presumed. Equivalent of JAPAN 101, JAPAN 102, JAPAN 103. Satisfies requirement for entry to JAPAN 201. Students with prior background must take placement test.
