Professor of Japanese Paul Atkins and PhD student Nobuko Horikawa are co-authors, with an international team of researchers, of "Lunar eclipses illuminate timing and climate impact of medieval volcanism," published in Nature on April 5. The article describes how medieval records, including Japanese records from the poet and scribe Fujiwara no Teika in the early 13th century, have allowed researchers to narrow down the probable dates and intensity of volcanic eruptions in medieval times.
