At a celebration dinner attended by over 400 people on February 11, local publisher and community activist Assunta Ng announced the creation of a new endowment for AL&L: the Seattle Chinese Post (Xi Hua Bao) Innovation Fund in Asian Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Documentary filmmaker Miki Dezaki screened his 2018 debut work "Shusenjo: The Main Battlefield of the 'Comfort Women' Issue" to 40 members of the university community on February 15, 2023. This event explored the fraught discourse and contemporary representations of the “comfort women,” a euphemism for the sex slaves of the Japanese empire. As of Winter 2023, the new major and minor in South Asian Languages and Cultures are live! The major is 65 credits. Students can go in depth with a single South Asian language or combine two South Asian languages from our offerings (Bengali, Hindi, Sanskrit, Urdu), along with literature and culture courses.
