At a celebration dinner attended by over 400 people on February 11, local publisher and community activist Assunta Ng announced the creation of a new endowment for AL&L: the Seattle Chinese Post (Xi Hua Bao) Innovation Fund in Asian Languages, Literatures and Cultures. Assunta was our department’s convocation speaker last June. The celebration was given in honor of Assunta and her husband George Liu for over 40 years of service to the Asian American communities in the Puget Sound Region and beyond. The endowment is named after the groundbreaking Chinese-language newspaper that Assunta founded four decades ago. AL&L was represented at the dinner by faculty members Paul Atkins, Nazry Bahrawi, Zev Handel, and Joe Marino and students Anna Schnell, Evangeline Zhang, Jieyu Zhou, and Xi Zhu. As department chair, Zev Handel presented Assunta with a certificate of gratitude signed by faculty, staff, and students from the department. Assunta’s creation of the endowment was generously supplemented by donations from members of the community. The endowment will fund programs, events and activities within the department, including public outreach and course development.
