Biography

B.A., Japanese, Beijing Language and Culture University
M.A., Asian Studies, University of British Columbia

Ricky Chen is a PhD student whose research field lies in modern Japanese-language literature, focusing on the literary production from/about Okinawa, Indigenous Peoples in Japan, and decolonization in particular.

Ricky’s research examines literary interventions in portraying land, memory, and solidarity as a form of decolonial ethics within postwar Japan. He has been paying special attention to the relationship between literary imagination and decolonization efforts in Okinawa, and is now working on utilizing more research methodologies from postcolonial, decolonial studies, and Indigenous studies into this topic. Beyond his academic pursuits, he enjoys composing modern poetry in both Japanese and Chinese, and exploring narrative worlds through video games including Assassin’s Creed series, miHoYo games-Genshin Impact, and The Legend of Zelda series.

Please feel free to contact him by email in English, Japanese, and Chinese.
