Ben Zhang received his B.E. in Engineering Mechanics from Beihang University and his M.A. in
Language Studies from City University of Hong Kong. In his MA project, by studying the Chinese
Buddhist transcriptions from several Tang-dynasty Buddhist texts and analyzing the diffusion of
the concerning sound changes, he evaluated two significant sound changes in Middle
Chinese Chang’an dialect to argue for a chain shift thereon.
He now aims to combine and make mutually supporting the investigation into Old Chinese morphology and that into related contemporary and later sound changes, taking into consideration evidence of various sources.
