In Memoriam:  Alan J. Berkowitz, M.A. '80, Ph.D. '89 (1950-2015)

The members of the Department of Asian Languages and Literature regret the passing of Professor Alan J. Berkowitz.  At the time of his death, Professor Berkowitz was Susan W. Lippincott Professor of Modern and Classical Languages and Professor of Chinese at Swarthmore College.  He was awarded an M.A. (1980) and Ph.D. (1989) by this department.  His doctoral dissertation, titled "Patterns of reclusion in early and early medieval China: A study of the formulation of the practice of reclusion in China and its portrayal," was directed by Professor Emeritus David Knechtges.
