Dana Fried, a graduate student in the Asian Languages and Cultures Program at the Department of Asian Languages & Literature, has been awarded a Critical Language Scholarship for the study of Chinese in Taiwan during the summer of 2025. CLS awards support Americans in studying and mastering foreign languages that are considered critical to national security, economic prosperity, and engagement with the world.
Dana is very excited to be studying in a Chinese speaking place for the first time since beginning her Mandarin studies at Carleton College during the COVID-19 pandemic. She hopes to make meaningful connections in Taiwan and to use the experience to complement her course work at UW. Dana is currently working as a research assistant in the Bilingual and Biliteracy Research lab and is assisting with two research projects.
Congratulations, Dana!
