Urdu Proficiency & Placement

Proficiency Exams measure your ability in a language and are used to satisfy or waive language requirements.

Placement Interviews determine which language class is appropriate for your background and ability, and are only necessary if you intend to take the course. The interview results cannot be substituted for a proficiency exam. 

The department does not offer either Proficiency or Placement to those outside the University.


For registered UW students to waive the one-year UW foreign language requirement, take the The Urdu Proficiency Exam is administered at the Office of Educational Assessment, 440 Schmitz Hall [map], (206) 543-1171. Contact the OEA to set up a date and time for you to take this Proficiency Exam.


For registered UW students interested in the Urdu language and would like to start or continue their studies, send an email to the Urdu language instructor Jameel Ahmad at with your (1) name, (2) student ID #, (3) e-mail address.
