Random Thoughts on Japanese and Chinese Calligraphy

Yoshiaki Shimizu, Princeton University
Friday, April 26, 2013 - 3:30pm
Gowen 201

Prof. Shimizu will explore the transmission of Chinese writing systems to Japan and their subsequent transformation, centered on the visual display of classical Chinese calligraphy and its metamorphosis in Japan.  He will emphasize the process by which “artistic” writing forms, such as cursive kana writing, emerged in Japan, making the evolved writing no longer re-exportable to the place of its origins.

Yoshiaki Shimizu is Frederick Marquand Professor of Art and Archaeology, emeritus, at Princeton University.
