R. Keller Kimbrough (University of Colorado, Boulder) will show slides from several exquisitely illustrated prequels to this medieval tale and discuss the conflicting explanations provided by late-medieval and early Edo-period authors for Shuten Doji's transformation from a more-or-less human child to the sake-drinking, flesh-eating demon, and illuminate some of the more creative ways in which particular authors recast Shuten Doji's story as a means of furthering their own Buddhist sectarian and moral agenda.
