Focuses on literature from a limited time period or particular aspects of pre-modern or modern Japanese culture.
This course introduces kyōgen, a medieval Japanese comic play, which was developed from the mid-14th century to the mid-16th century along with the nō play. Because of the nature of comedy, many themes of kyōgen were taken from everyday life, such as money, food, gender, and power. Students will explore these themes as well as other literary aspects of the genre through close reading, discussion, and writing. No knowledge of Japanese required.
Requirements include regular participation, short response papers and a term paper.
